Mr. Riester maintains a general practice of law with emphasis
on civil litigation and health care law. His litigation
practice has included commercial litigation, estate and
trust litigation, complex product liability matters, accident
reconstruction, shareholder disputes and restrictive covenants.
He has successfully represented major manufacturers, insurance
carriers and local businesses as well as individuals in
a variety of litigation matters, including personal injury
and wrongful death claims. They have included hydraulic
cranes, propane gas controls, heavy-duty trucks, product
warnings, automobile power steering systems, ore-handling
equipment and bottle closure design. In addition, Mr. Riester
served as the Town Attorney for the Town of New Scotland
from 1980-1991 and 1998-1999. In that position, he oversaw
the planning of three municipal water districts and one
municipal sewer district, in addition to handling protracted
litigation involving the permit application of a gravel
mine.
Mr. Riester also maintains an active health care practice,
with significant experience in the areas of
medical staff credentialing and professional licensure,
including the prosecution and defense of hospital disciplinary
proceedings, risk management, representation of physicians
before the New York State Department of Health’s Office
of Professional Medical Conduct, and disputes pertaining
to the construction of medical facilities.
Mr. Riester is admitted to practice in the courts of New
York, the United States District Courts for the Northern
and Western Districts of New York, and the United States
Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He is a member
of the New York State and Albany County Bar Associations,
the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and the New
York State Trial Lawyers Association. He has lectured on
the topics of expert proof and accident reconstruction for
the New York State Bar Association. Mr. Riester carries
the highest rating (AV) from the Martindale-Hubbell lawyer
registry, a rating based solely upon peer evaluations.
A native of Long Island, Mr. Riester is a graduate of the
Stony Brook School and attended the University of Rochester,
where he was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Business
Administration. He received his law degree from Albany Law
School of Union University. While in law school, he was
appointed to the Albany Law Review and served as one of
its editors.
